Manuscript & the Thesis Sync Chrome extension

Questions below are grouped into the Thesis Sync extension (capturing the web into Manuscript) and the Manuscript app itself. Can't find an answer? Email support@eliteainway.com and we'll help.

Getting started

The fastest path from install to your first capture.

What is Manuscript, and what does the extension do?

Manuscript is a research workspace — a collaborative editor with AI assistance, Deep Research, Study Guides, and a place to keep your papers and sources.

Thesis Sync is the companion Chrome extension: one click saves the page you're reading — clean article text, its metadata, linked PDFs, slides, and video transcripts — straight into your Manuscript account.

How do I connect the extension to my account?
  1. In Manuscript, open Account → Developer and generate a developer token.
  2. Click the Thesis Sync icon in Chrome to open the popup.
  3. The Manuscript URL is pre-filled (https://manuscript.eliteainway.com) — leave it as-is unless you run your own instance.
  4. Paste your token and click Save. You're connected.

Your token is stored locally on your device and is only ever sent to your Manuscript instance.

Thesis Sync extension

Capturing the web into Manuscript.

What can I capture?
  • Web pages — distraction-free article text plus metadata (title, authors, DOI, publication, Open Graph).
  • Linked files — tick the PDFs, slides, or documents on a page to save them alongside it.
  • Google Slides — exported to PDF.
  • Videos — transcripts from YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, and Loom, when the platform exposes them.
  • Screenshots & tab recordings — capture the visible tab or record it, optionally with audio.

The extension only acts when you click it, and only on the tab you're viewing.

Where do my captures show up in Manuscript?

Open the Resources panel on the right. Captures land in the External section, grouped by their source URL. Drag any card into a document to cite or reference it, or use Add to Prompt to feed it to the AI.

I captured a video but there's no transcript. Why?

A transcript only appears if the platform actually exposes one. When it does, it shows as its own Transcript row grouped under the video in the Resources panel.

YouTube in particular often returns no caption content, even for videos that list captions — YouTube increasingly restricts transcript access to its own player. That's a limitation on YouTube's side, not a bug in the capture. Vimeo, Wistia, and Loom are more reliable.

A page came back blank, or only captured after I scrolled down.

Some sites load their article body lazily as you scroll. The extension now auto-scrolls a page before reading it so the full content is captured — make sure you're on the latest version (chrome://extensions → Reload). If a page still comes back thin, scroll to the bottom once, then capture.

Capture fails with "Failed to fetch."

This means the upload couldn't reach storage. After an extension update, open chrome://extensions, click Reload on Thesis Sync, and accept the new permission it requests. Then confirm you're connected (a valid token and the correct Manuscript URL in the popup) and try again.

What permissions does the extension need, and is my data private?

The extension does nothing in the background — it reads a page only when you click Capture, Screenshot, or Record on the active tab. It needs access to the video hosts (for transcripts), to your Manuscript instance's storage (to upload what you capture), and — only when you tick a linked file — to that file's site to download it.

Everything you capture goes only to the Manuscript instance you connect. Nothing is sent to the extension's developer; there is no analytics, tracking, or remote code. Full detail is in the privacy policy.

Manuscript app

Accounts, plans, and features.

How do I sign in or create an account?

Sign in with Google, or create an account with your email and a password. Email sign-ups get a verification link — check spam if it doesn't arrive within a minute, or use "resend" on the sign-in screen.

What plans are available, and how does billing work?

There's a free tier plus paid plans that unlock higher limits and premium features, along with optional credit top-ups. Current prices, what each tier includes, and your usage are shown in the app under Settings → Billing. Billing is handled securely through our payments provider.

What are Deep Research and Study Guides?

Deep Research runs a multi-step pipeline over the literature and delivers a cited report, emailed to you as PDF and Word.

Study Guides generate a structured, multi-day guide on any topic, also delivered as PDF and Word.

Both are long-running and email you when finished. You can re-send a past report or guide any time from the History panel (the clock icon in the AI panel).

Can I re-send a research report or study guide email?

Yes. Open the History panel (clock icon in the AI panel), find the report or guide, and click Email me — it re-renders and re-sends the PDF and Word files to your account address.

Is my work saved, and can I recover an earlier version?

Documents save automatically as you edit. Manuscript also keeps periodic backups you can view, compare, and restore. Deleted documents go to Trash and are recoverable for a limited period before being purged.

How do I get more help or report a problem?

Use the in-app feedback option, or email support@eliteainway.com. For extension issues, tell us the page URL and what you clicked — it helps us reproduce quickly.
